Right, so you’ve resolved to roll your own cigarettes, drink cheap bourbon and date men that remind you of Tom Waits. Ladies (and gentlemen) the next step is to come see Black Diamond Heavies. A raw and dirty duo, Reverent James Leg and Van Campbell have created a culmination of garage rock, soul, and old time religion that might just make you say “you DAMN right!” Signed to Alive Records (Black Keys, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Soledad Brothers) the Heavies bring something different to organ blues, saloon vocals, and busted drums –and I don’t just mean badass facial hair. Turn up “Poor Brown Sugar” cause you’re going to get an urge…The urge to raise your glass (of cheap bourbon) and thank the South for rough-and-tumble, trucker looking, preacher sounding men that sure know how to put on a show.

Black Diamond Heavies play The Bug Jar, Wednesday, July 23rd.

Fallen Idols: The music of Phil Spector, Jack Nitzsche, Joe Meek & Andrew Loog Oldham

Curated by Michael Neault.

Monday, June 30th, 8 p.m. @ Bug Jar — FREE

Phil Spector was the first producer to take pop music seriously when everyone else denounced it as an annoying fad. In the face of adversity, he was a consummate artist and a certified maniac. And it made him unbelievably rich. People often use the word “genius” when describing Phil Spector. He might be more accurately described as someone who is very very smart, but who has done some very very dumb things. Spector waxed an unparalleled set of hits in the early to mid-60s for The Crystals, The Ronettes and The Righteous Brothers, but after dropping an egg with “River Deep, Mountain High” for Ike & Tina Turner, he went on an indefinite hiatus. He made sporadic records for George Harrison, John Lennon, The Ramones, Leonard Cohen and an unreleased album by Celine Dion (pre-Titanic), but by most accounts has spent a good deal of time spinning his wheels, reliving past glories, and indulging in all manners of decadence, depravity and all-around bad behavior. Phil Spector was an enormous influence on Andrew Loog Oldham (the original manager and producer of The Rolling Stones), who idolized the man and spent time with him in London. A few notable copycat moves by Oldham: keeping an intense bodyguard in close proximity at all times; insistence on ownership of master tapes by artists he produced; and spending a butt-load of money of clothing. Oldham is probably best remembered as an incomparable purveyor of taste, and his roster of artists define mod style: The Rolling Stones, Vashti Bunyan, The Small Faces, The Nice and P.P. Arnold.

Joe Meek was a brilliant bug-eyed nutter. He had a signature producing style characterized by warm, jaunty pop sounds and big beats. Meek was active in London at the same time as Oldham, but his career started to fizzle, just as Oldham’s began to sparkle. Meek produced The Honeycombs, The Tornados, Petula Clark, Gene Vincent and a host of artists that are less recognizable, but just as worthy.

Jack Nitzsche was an arranger, producer, soundtrack composer and also a solo artist and occasional session musician. Nitzsche melded a classical intellect with 60s pop music. His signature style is defined by graceful, melancholic strings that sound like something out of a poetic neo-Western. His music is distinctively post-war Americana, that is to say, it reminds one of broad vistas, strong ideals and broken dreams. Neil Young’s first album from 1970, or Buffalo Springfield’s “Expecting to Fly,” showcase Nitzsche’s talent at their chamber-psychedelic best. Nitzsche worked with Phil Spector on the majority of his productions, and was one of the few arrangers savvy (and patient) enough to translate Spector’s thoughts for the studio.

These four artists hold a personal intrigue for me. It began by inspecting liner notes and record covers and trying to trace the genius of the recordings I love. The producers were often far more interesting than the artists themselves. They were smarter, crazier and their careers often outlived their faddish bands. Phil Spector, Jack Nitzsche, Joe Meek & Andrew Loog Oldham were essentially pop producers who made happy music that thrilled a gazillion teenagers all over the world. But beneath the sunny pop records, there is something darker and much more sad than what’s on the surface. Unlike the songwriters, they couldn’t express their feelings in the lyrics. But something very personal still remains encrypted in their methods and sounds.

In 1979, Jack Nitzsche was arrested for violent assault on his girlfriend. He once appealed for help from his friend Phil Spector, but Spector was so frightened by his erratic behavior that he wouldn’t even open the door to speak with him. At a very low ebb in the 90s, Nitzsche found himself involved in an altercation with the police that was captured on the television show, Cops. Joe Meek suffered from crippling paranoia, which often hindered his personal and working relationships. Meek died in 1967. After shooting his landlady with a shotgun, he turned the gun on himself. On February 3, 2003, Phil Spector was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was accused of shooting a 40-year old nightclub hostess. The trial is still ongoing. Andrew Loog Oldham is still alive, but suffered a fate perhaps worse than the other three. Years of substance abuse and shady financial management of his Immediate records led to self-exile in Colombia, where Oldham reportedly kicked his drug habit, quit producing records and turned to the church of scientology.

The evening will feature a sampling of music associated with these four artists, along with a selection of related movies, clips and performances.

From the K Records web site:

Jeremy Jay lives in Angel town, next to Larchmont where he hangs out. He’s tall (6′3) blond (really) and handsome and wants a cat for his apartment. He writes and plays piano and guitar. He says one of his favorite things to do is drive around with the moonroof open and listen to music with his friends. It seems that he’s both a small town boy and a big city boy in one.

Jeremy’s writing is influenced by dreams and the more fantastic surrealist sensibility linked with the French New Wave. The Art deco era storybook romance of the movies like ” Our Modern Maidens” & “My Life To Live” held a special fascination. There’s also a strong ’50s Rock n’ Roll sensibility happening; Buddy Holly is one of Jeremy’s favorite singers along with Richie Valens and ’60s era Yea-Yea Francois Hardy.

On the surface, his performances seem like that of a pop singer: dancing, singing and playing guitar. Yet he’s so illusive. If you reach out to grab him you wouldn’t touch anything; all you see is a character from the Dream World. Like Buddy Holly, Peter Pan and the John Hughes movies rolled into one. He’s pure Storybook.

Pitchfork review of Spinto’s debut album, Nice and Nicely Done

…the Spinto Band’s two lead singers traverse enough styles for a week’s worth of positive Pitchfork notices. Nick Krill does the wobbly David Byrne warble about as well as deservedly lauded Clap Your Hands Say “It Boy” Alec Ounsworth. See harpsichord-splashed breakup song “Did I Tell You” and Turtles-quoting synth-pop come-on “Spy Vs. Spy”. But Krill can also do dead-on Brighten the Corners-era Steve-O Malkmus (”Late”, which brightly details the everyday dangers of rushing home for a favorite show: “It’s slippery by the pool”). Meanwhile, fellow songwriter Thomas Hughes covers the sotto-voce sensitive-guy territory. His kazoo-enhanced “Brown Boxes” zooms in on a move-out/breakup: packing a pointless Hummel figurine while half-wishing for box-cutters sharp enough to “end it all”. As throughout the album, a buoyant chorus saves the day.

Dirty on Purpose are a four piece from Brooklyn who’ve been likened to Yo La Tengo, My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth. They pack a youthful, rocky, anti-shoe-gaze wallop in an ethereal, but lasting way…you know what I mean? Yeah.

Those geniuses are (although not limited to): MATHEMATICIANS, MOSE GIGANTICUS, and THE EMOTRON.

Mathematicians:
http://myspace.com/mathematicians - Math based punk rock dance synth pop from the NY Tri-state area [sounds like a math class taught by Johnny-5, grades based on dance moves and overall rock prowess]

Mose Giganticus:
http://myspace.com/mosegiganticus - energetic, dirty, synth punk [sounds like what would happen if andrew wk’s head were put on a robot body at an auto chop shop run by gary numan]

The Emotron:
http://myspace.com/theemotron - electronic spastic one man band/performance art maniac [sounds like atom and his package after drinking 5 redbulls while watching a macully culkin marathon in a covered wagon fording a river.]

PLUS: May 1 is Paul Martino’s birthday. Come to help celebrate international worker’s solidarity and hear some “your mama” jokes.

Price for the night is $5 over, $7 under. Save up that lunch money!

Experimental filmmaker Michael Robinson in person!

The Dryden Theatre
Monday, April 14th
8pm | $5

Video games, television shows, pop songs and magazines - these are the raw ingredients with which Michael Robinson makes his own brand of independent cinema. Where else can you find in one film the music of Guns’N'Roses, the writings of Ayn Rand spoken in a chant, and the voice of Skeletor soundtracking the sites of past World’s Fairs?

The film and video work of Michael Robinson consists of equal parts landscape cinematography and pop culture mashup, and it is through the interaction between these two seemingly disparate modes of filmmaking that his work becomes transcendent. Milking out every drop of saccharine bliss from pop songs, Michael sweetens the normally doom-ridden theme of humanity’s failure to achieve heaven on Earth in Victory Over the Sun (2007). And We All Shine On (2006) is interested in the harmonies and discordances brought out by positioning and repositioning the natural world around the virtual, while you don’t bring me flowers (2005) investigates our fascination with pictorial tourism through a slideshow of National Geographic two-page landscape spreads. 2007’s Light is Waiting uses a heavily manipulated, very special episode of Full House as fodder to launch in to an examination of our media’s colonialist tendencies toward the exotic Other.

Other films to be screened include The General Returns From One Place to Another (2006), Tidal (2002), Chiquita and the Soft Escape (2003), and his most recent video, All Through the Night (2008).

Hosted by Doug McLaren and Jason Middleton
Co-sponsored by University of Rochester’s Department of English, and Film & Media Studies
